About the position

La Trobe University’s Department of Social Inquiry seeks to appoint an excellent candidate to a Level A (continuing) Teaching Focused position. This teaching-focused position is designed to help deliver the Crime, Justice and Legal Studies curriculum which has relied heavily on casual staff in the past. To be eligible for this role, applicants must:

  1. Have casual experience or fixed term experience at La Trobe University totaling at least two (2) teaching sessions at the University in the previous two (2) years.
  2. Have not held a continuing position in a university in the previous three (3) years.

This position is located within the Crime, Justice and Legal Studies Program, which is part of the Department of Social Inquiry in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Staff within this program deliver the Crime, justice and Legal Studies major within the Bachelor of Arts and co-deliver the Bachelor of Criminology with the Law School.

The program takes an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research about law and law-related issues and has a strong commitment to the achievement of excellence and to social justice.

The Department of Social Inquiry also includes the Aboriginal Studies, Sociology, Anthropology and Sustainability and Development programs.

The successful candidate is expected to be a full and active member of the Department of Social Inquiry and will also have regular contact with staff in the Law School who are involved in teaching and research in Criminology.

 

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • Completion or near-completion of a PhD in socio-legal studies, critical criminology or a cognate field demonstrating an interdisciplinary criminological approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to be effective in teaching and curriculum development in face-to-face, blended and/or online modes, as evidenced by, for example, high results on student feedback on teaching surveys relative to their peers, or through other forms of evidence.
  • Ability to engage with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively, collaboratively and productively with staff and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Evidence of engagement with interdisciplinary and critical approaches to teaching and learning within socio-legal studies and/or critical criminology.
