La Trobe University’s Indigenous Strategy & Education , in collaboration with the Prevention & Inclusion team and Art Therapy, is seeking a passionate and community-minded Research Assistant to support the delivery of an innovative, Indigenous-led project: 
Empowering Change: A Visual-Art Bystander Approach to Gender-Based Violence in Indigenous Communities. 

This initiative responds to the Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Action Plan (2023–2026) and advances the La Trobe Indigenous Strategy (2023–2031), prioritising Indigenous leadership, truth-telling, and culturally safe practices. 

About the Role 

This part-time role (1 day or 0.2FTE per week for 12 months) is ideal for a student or early-career researcher with an interest in: 

  • Indigenous-led research and community engagement experience 

  • Gender-based violence prevention knowledge or experience 

  • Art therapy and trauma-informed approaches knowledge or experience 

You’ll contribute to writing literature reviews, co-designing workshops, undertaking evaluation, developing resources and content, and supporting culturally safe engagement practices. 

The role is primarily supervised by Associate Professor Michael Donovan, with secondary supervision by Dr Cuong La, and Associate Professor Theresa Van Lith. This will provide the opportunity to work in a collaborative, flexible, and respectful environment within La Trobe University. 

Key Skills & Experience 

We welcome expressions of interest from individuals who have: 

  • An interest in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities 

  • A relevant background or are near completion of studies in Indigenous Studies, Art Therapy, Public Health, Gender Studies, Education, or related fields 

  • Strong research, writing, and organisational skills 

  • A commitment to trauma-informed, culturally safe, and community-led approaches
