About the position:

The Victorian Government has partnered with La Trobe University to establish the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Innovation (ACAMI).

Established in 2024, ACAMI is a collaborative research, clinical trials and workforce development centre operating at the intersection of AI and medical innovation. The Centre supports local medical research institutes and industry partners, delivering new and additional capabilities to ensure Victoria’s world-leading medical innovation and life sciences research ecosystem maintains pace with global standards and opportunities as AI capability develops.

The Centre builds upon on La Trobe University’s existing capabilities across artificial intelligence research, cancer, immunology and immunotherapy research, a well-established clinical trial network, and recognised leadership in producing industry-ready graduates.

The Principal Research Fellow will work with the ACAMI Director & Chief Scientist, and Director, Development, the ACAMI team, internal and external stakeholders to realise ACAMI’s mission of becoming a commercially sustainable centre which leverages AI technologies, data and skills innovation to drive transformation and growth of an AI-enabled medical ecosystem in Victoria.

With in-depth expertise and extensive experience in computational biology and the application of AI technologies to relevant medical and/or biotechnology industries, the Principal Research Fellow will work with, and support research programs and activities led by ACAMI’s Director & Chief Scientist, including the centre’s engagement with industry and research partners to meet the centre’s research and industry engagement goals. This role will help establish and maintain ACAMI’s research collaborations and collaborative working relationships with academic divisions of the university.

Reporting to the Director & Chief Scientist of ACAMI, some of your duties will include:

  • Work with ACAMI’s Director & Chief Scientist to provide leadership in designing and directing cross-disciplinary research initiatives at the intersection of AI and medical innovation, ensuring alignment with ACAMI’s mission and priorities.
  • Actively seek and secure significant research funding from both industry and government sources by initiating large-scale competitive research funding proposals and building collaborative partnerships.
  • Lead and oversee major research projects within the Centre, guiding teams under ACAMI’s Director & Chief Scientist to deliver impactful AI solutions for real-world medical and biological challenges.
  • Drive an extensive external funding strategy by cultivating high-level relationships with industry, government, and philanthropic bodies to secure large-scale research grants, consultancies, and partnerships.
  • Collaborate with ACAMI’s Director, Development, to shape and implement strategic plans, ensuring alignment with broader University goals and the evolving landscape of AI in healthcare.
  • Establish and sustain pivotal collaborations with internal and external partners, fostering environments that accelerate the translation of research insights into practical tools, technologies, and processes.
  • Lead the creation of robust funding pipelines by identifying emerging opportunities, guiding proposal development, and managing stakeholder relationships to expand the Centre’s research portfolio.

Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area (e.g., Computational Biology, Biomedical Informatics).
  • A substantial record of high-impact research in AI-driven or computational biomedical/biological research, with international recognition.
  • A significant record of securing substantial external funding through competitive grants, industry partnerships, government contracts, or philanthropic channels.
  • Demonstrated ability in initiating and coordinating large-scale, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research projects through collaborating with both industry and academic partners.
  • Proven track record of substantial publication in top-tier AI or interdisciplinary journals and delivering keynote/plenary talks at leading international conferences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience in liaising with staff at all levels of an organisation, negotiating effective outcomes, consultation and facilitation of group discussions.
