About the position
La Trobe Art Institute (LAI) is La Trobe University’s public-facing hub of contemporary art and the custodian of La Trobe’s 7 collections. Through arts and culture, we give expression to the links between La Trobe’s research, student experience, creative industries, local communities and Country.
The Visitor Services and Events Coordinator is a key role managing La Trobe Art Institute’s public facing activity, primarily delivered at our contemporary art space in on Djaara Country (Bendigo).
Here, we deliver a program of exhibitions, residencies and public programs in addition to providing space for community events and commercial hire. These activities invite a diverse public to connect with La Trobe through encounters with contemporary art and ideas.
This role will oversee the Administration Officer and Casual Visitor Service team. With a focus on providing exceptional visitor experience, the role is responsible for front-of-house, community access, commercial hire, residency bookings and collaborating with the curatorial team to promote and deliver public programs. Our facilities include galleries, auditorium, meeting spaces, artist studio and apartment. The smooth operation of activities across these spaces is crucial to ensuring repeat visitation and audience growth.
Skills and Experience
To be considered for this position, you will have:
- Degree with subsequent relevant experience in an event management and/or program development role, ideally in an art museum or similar cultural institution or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated customer service focus and solution orientated approach.
- High level proficiency in computer software packages including word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail (ideally Mailchimp), online survey and ticketing tools (ie: Survey Monkey, Eventbrite, Humantix) and capacity for web training.
- Substantial experience in the management of events within a cultural setting; incorporating all aspects from contract negotiation to successful delivery of event.
- The ability to represent the LAI in a variety of cultural settings encompassing all levels of formality.
- Proven capacity to manage a budget and physical resources.
- Proven ability and willingness to contribute to the success of a small team; the ability to be flexible and to think creatively and laterally.
