About the position
This position is in the Enabling Programs team, part of the Widening Participation and Outreach department within the Office of the Provost. Widening Participation and Outreach is responsible for activities and programs that inform post-secondary school aspiration and access to university students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, and Enabling Programs is the academic unit that supports university entry for aspiring students without a traditional entry pathway. The team delivers the Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP), one of Victoria’s major Enabling Programs, as an ATAR-alternative pathway program for school students (Aspire Prepare) and plays a key role in supporting the University’s equity mission.
Reporting to the Academic Director, Widening Participation, the Lecturer, Enabling Programs, leads the Enabling Programs team, managing two Associate Lectures as well as casual academic staff. The incumbent is responsible for day-to-day academic administration including acting as Subject Coordinator for the program’s subjects, ensuring grading and student support is delivered in a timely manner, and maintaining subject role-overs. The position works closely with other colleagues in the Widening Participation and Outreach department, as well as teams across the University, particularly Admissions.
The academic programs (TPP and Prepare) are taught entirely online. The subjects are asynchronous but intensively taught, using supportive and scaffolded developmental feedback on frequent, low stakes assessments to develop learner confidence and academic skills. Experience in an innovative online learning environment will be highly valued.
Key Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position, you will have:
- PhD degree or equivalent accreditation and standing recognized by the University/profession as appropriate.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, curriculum development and subject coordination in online modes, preferable asynchronous, as evidenced by sustained high results on student feedback on teaching surveys, teaching excellence awards or through other forms of evidence.
- Experience working within University policy and procedural environments including academic administration tasks (grades, subject administration, responding to academic misconduct etc).
- Emerging or established engagement with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, in particular in the areas of: supporting academic skill development at the Enabling level and/or effective and innovative online pedagogies and/or supporting the transition to higher education of people from diverse/disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively, collaboratively, and productively with staff and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
- Proven experience and success in managing academic staff performance and development.
