About the position 

This dual role combines a continuing substantive appointment as Associate Professor (Teaching & Research) in either Law or Criminology with a 3-year fixed-term leadership role as Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching). For the duration of the 3-year term, the leadership responsibilities of Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) will be at 0.6 FTE, while the Associate Professor (Teaching & Research) duties will be at 0.4 FTE. At the conclusion of the 3-year term, the Associate Professor (Teaching & Research) position will revert to 1.0 FTE as the underlying continuing role. 

The Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) is responsible and accountable for providing high quality educational leadership within the Law School, and for the development, implementation and review of educational initiatives that are aligned with the Law School’s and University’s strategic priorities in learning and teaching and the student experience. The Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) manages school-based learning and teaching initiatives, ensuring the quality and continuous improvement of courses and the development of a school environment that promotes outstanding learning outcomes for students. 

An Associate Professor (Teaching & Research) continuing role in either Law or Criminology is suited to an experienced academic leader with an outstanding track record in both teaching and research. The role’s key expectations include producing high-quality research outputs, securing external research funding, and delivering an exceptional educational experience for law or criminology students.  

Some of your duties will include:  

  • With the Dean and other senior Law School leaders, working directly with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and working, as appropriate, with central portfolios to design, implement and monitor a Law School Learning & Teaching Strategy aligned to supporting the University Strategy and achieving Law School learning and teaching targets.
  • Providing strategic oversight of the quality and efficiency of the Law School’s coursework portfolio, while ensuring the appropriate design, documentation, approval and implementation of course and subject revisions in conjunction with University processes.
  • Working closely with divisional portfolios to ensure School level implementation and monitoring of the University’s strategic priorities for the student experience.
  • Supporting the Dean in achieving School performance targets for Learning and Teaching quality.
  • Providing leadership at all levels within the Law School to ensure timely and academically appropriate management of learning and teaching related oversight activities, including course and subject monitoring, moderation and results.
  • Develop, teach and coordinate subjects and courses that engage and motivate students whilst providing a high-quality learning experience.
  • Actively and collegially participate in the leadership of the Law School and the University, including as a member of the School Executive and the Senior Leadership Group and in cross-functional committees, planning and projects.
  • Chair relevant Law School committees and participate in, or represent the Law School on, other relevant internal and external committees.
  • Ensuring activity in the Law School’s Learning & Teaching portfolio aligns with and supports the University’s strategy for regional Victoria.
  • Conduct and lead outstanding innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications arising from the research. 
Skills and knowledge required for the position:  
  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline areas.
  • Proven commitment to the highest quality teaching in either Law or Criminology, including evidence of leadership in teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with demonstrated experience of teaching in different modes (including in-person and online), and knowledge of market opportunities for course development.
  • Evidence of effective contributions to leadership and management at the Department, School or University level.
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership to ensure that the Law School achieves its strategic goals and KPIs for quality of learning and teaching, student experience and retention (including through curriculum development and effective staff development).
  • Distinguished record of nationally and/or internationally recognised independent research, with evidence of its impact and significance.
  • Strong record of publications, including papers in leading international journals and/or invited presentation at international conferences.
  • Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, communication, management and presentation skills including the ability to inspire, motivate and lead; build and supervise teams; manage resources; and establish strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
