About the position

The Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Advisor supports strong environmental governance across the University by maintaining compliance with Commonwealth, state, and local environmental legislation, monitoring environmental performance, and driving continuous improvement in environmental management practices.

The position ensures environmental risks are systematically identified, managed, and mitigated, and that compliance obligations are met across all campuses. It also offers a rare opportunity to work across La Trobe’s highly biodiverse campuses, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to protect and enhance areas of high environmental significance.

The role embeds effective environmental management practices into the University’s operations, infrastructure and asset development, procurement, research activities, and campus planning, while also engaging with external stakeholders such as community groups and local government as required.

In addition, the Advisor builds environmental capability and awareness across the University community, ensuring staff, students, contractors, and partners understand their environmental responsibilities and contribute to the University’s sustainability objectives.

Through a collaborative approach, the role supports delivery of La Trobe’s Environmental Sustainability Policy, Environmental Management System, Green Star Communities and Buildings initiatives, and emerging ESG and sustainable finance requirements.

 

 Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001:2015-compliant Environmental Management System (EMS) within a complex organisation, or equivalent applied experience in environmental management, regulatory compliance, or environmental governance roles where a structured environmental management framework operates (e.g. EPA, local government, infrastructure or facilities management environments).Demonstrated understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations, including experience interpreting requirements and supporting organisations to meet environmental regulatory obligations.
  • Experience undertaking environmental audits, compliance reviews and investigations, including preparing audit reports, identifying non-conformances and supporting corrective and preventative action planning.
