Position purpose:

The Complex Care and Case Navigator will coordinate institutional responses to students presenting with complex, multifaceted and high-risk circumstances requiring multidisciplinary assessment and intervention. The role will work across Wellbeing Services, Safer Community, Student Advising, Student Conduct, Accommodation Services, Legal Services, Ask La Trobe and other relevant University areas to support coordinated decision-making, risk management and safe, student-centred outcomes.

Join us in establishing and shaping an important new function that strengthens La Trobe’s response to complex student matters, supporting clearer escalation pathways, collaboration and student-centred outcomes.

Reporting to the Director, Wellbeing Services and Respectful Communities, the Complex Care and Case Navigator will coordinate institutional responses to students experiencing complex or high-risk circumstances. Working across Wellbeing Services, Safer Community, Student Advising, Student Conduct, Accommodation, Legal Services, Ask La Trobe and other areas, you will support coordinated decision-making, risk management and appropriate interventions.

You will provide operational and governance support for complex matters, including incident management, Threat Assessment and Management Team (TAMT) processes and multidisciplinary review forums.

Drawing on your understanding of psychosocial complexity, trauma-informed practice, behavioural risk and higher education governance, you will support safe, coordinated responses aligned with University policies, legislation and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate complex student matters requiring multidisciplinary review and intervention.
• Act as the operational coordinator for incident management cases within the Student Experience and Employability division.
• Support Threat Assessment and Management Team processes, including agendas, case summaries, briefing papers, meeting documentation, minutes, action registers and follow-up.
• Gather, analyse and synthesise information from multiple systems, records and stakeholders to support risk assessment, case planning and institutional decision-making.
• Monitor the implementation of agreed actions, recommendations and risk mitigation strategies.
• Develop effective working relationships with academic and professional areas, internal services and relevant external agencies.
• Prepare high-quality reports, briefings, correspondence and governance documentation for senior leaders and decision-making bodies.
• Contribute to the review and development of procedures, service integration and continuous improvement across the portfolio.
• Provide operational and strategic coordination support to the Director, Wellbeing Services and Respectful Communities.

Essential criteria

• Relevant qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Law or a related discipline, with significant post-qualification experience in complex case coordination, psychosocial assessment, behavioural risk management, wellbeing services or a related field.
• Experience in risk assessment, case management and responding to complex presentations across diverse client groups.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the higher education environment, including student wellbeing, student conduct, academic integrity, complaints, behavioural risk management and relevant legislative, regulatory and policy frameworks.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality case records, reports and briefings.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement, manage competing priorities and work autonomously within a high-demand environment.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across professional disciplines and organisational boundaries.
• An understanding of privacy, recordkeeping, compliance and governance requirements.
