La Trobe University is embarking on an exciting transformation of its data and analytics capabilities. We're seeking a highly skilled Senior Analytics Engineer to help build the trusted, scalable and analytics-ready data products that support decision-making across the University.

Working within a modern Azure, Databricks and dbt environment, you'll play a critical role in designing robust data models, developing semantic layers and delivering high-quality data assets that enable reporting, analytics and emerging AI initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced analytics engineering professional who enjoys solving complex problems, influencing technical standards and mentoring others while remaining hands-on with technology.

About the position

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Data & Analytics Engineering, you will:

  • Design, develop and own scalable Gold-layer data products, semantic models and analytics-ready data assets that support enterprise decision-making.
  • Build and optimise semantic layers that support enterprise reporting and self-service analytics.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, analysts and business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective solutions.
  • Champion best-practice data modelling, testing, documentation and governance standards.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute technical leadership across the analytics engineering capability.
  • Support the delivery of innovative analytics and AI-ready solutions that create value for the University community.
  • Act as a technical authority for analytics engineering, establishing modelling standards, reusable patterns and quality practices across the University.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Significant experience delivering enterprise data and analytics solutions.
  • Advanced expertise in SQL, dimensional modelling and analytics engineering practices.
  • Experience working with modern cloud data platforms such as Azure, Databricks and dbt.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata, lineage and data quality principles.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
