The Abbey lab, within the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (SCEMS), has an exciting opportunity for a Research Officer to join the team.

- Classification: Level A - Base salary from $84,205 + 17% superannuation
About the position
The focus of this role will be on surface chemistry for biosensing, requiring technical laboratory expertise in surface modification and characterisation of nanophotonic devices.
This position will contribute to building a critical mass of research support and expertise in developing biosensors for a wide range of sensing applications. A key impact outcome of this work will be the development of biosensors aimed at improving sensitivity, selectivity, and reliability across diverse detection contexts and end-user requirements.
Skills and Experience
The successful applicant will work as a member of Distinguished Professor Brian Abbey's group and will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of surface functionalisation for the biosensor platform. They will collaborate with colleagues across the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (SCEMS), the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment (SABE), and the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS), as well as with external industry partners.
To be successful in this role, you will need experience in surface chemistry, ideally including surface modification, electrochemical measurements, characterisation of nanophotonic devices using optical and electron microscopy, and preparation of tissue and cell culture samples.
