These part-time/3 Year fixed term leadership roles (0.5 FTE, fixed term) are held in conjunction with a substantive academic appointment and provide an opportunity to shape the future of education through visionary leadership, innovation and impact.

This is a single EOI process that allows eligible staff to apply for one or more of the HOD roles. Applicants are encouraged to indicate their preferred department(s) in their cover letter. Candidates are not restricted to their current department of appointment.

Key Responsibilities Across All HOD Roles

In each department, the Head of Department will:

  • Provide strategic and disciplinary leadership aligned with university and school priorities
  • Lead and manage teaching, research and industry engagement
  • Support academic workforce planning, performance development and capability building
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing and inclusive academic culture
  • Ensure delivery on departmental goals related to teaching, research and engagement

Departmental Focus Areas

1. Social Equity and Inclusive Education
Lead bold, equity-driven change in education through inclusive pedagogies, systemic leadership and transformative policies that shape socially just education systems.

2. Professional Practice and Wellbeing
Prepare future educators and embed teacher wellbeing across the educator lifecycle by leading innovative workforce development, pre-service education and professional learning initiatives.

3. Learning Sciences and Emerging Technologies
Drive next-generation education by leading a team at the forefront of AI, digital transformation and emerging pedagogies, fostering innovation in teaching and research.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate(s) will demonstrate:

  • A strong academic record and recognised leadership in a relevant field
  • Experience managing academic teams and driving strategic and cultural transformation
  • Proven ability to lead academic programs, research and partnerships
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Commitment to cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation
