About the position
The Academic Skills Advisor (ASA) is a key member of the Library Learning Services team. They work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional, cross-campus team of specialists, which includes Librarians and English Language Advisors, and report to a Senior Coordinator.
Positioned within the General Stream, the ASA contributes to a collective effort to enhance students' academic, digital, and information literacy skills across all levels of university study.
They operate within clearly defined role frameworks and service boundaries to provide high-quality, sustainable support services that place the Library at the heart of La Trobe University. In addition to their core responsibilities, Academic Skills Advisors also work alongside La Trobe’s Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs)—a team of students employed to deliver peer-to-peer support.
Specific duties for this position:
•Advising: Providing academic skills advice to individual and small groups of university students to support their transition to independent learning and academic success, as well as specialist advice (e.g., academic skills and learning) to university staff, including Peer Learning Advisors.
•Learning Resource Development: Designing and developing effective and inclusive in-subject and co-curricular programs and digital resources to improve student academic performance at all levels of university study.
•Workshop Delivery: Designing and delivering effective skill building workshops (online, in-person and blended) at all levels of university study.
Skills and Experience
To be considered for this position, you will have
- A postgraduate degree with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.
- Tertiary teaching or advising experience, and the ability to identify and appropriately respond to the learning needs of students.
- Demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by students undertaking tertiary study at Australian universities.
- Skills in utilizing theoretical best practices in higher education to create, implement, and assess instructional materials that enhance students' academic abilities and foster independent learning across multiple disciplines.
- Competence in designing and producing effective and inclusive digital learning resources for a learning management system.
Desirable
- A postgraduate qualification in Education, Applied Linguistics, TESOL or similar qualification.
- At least two years of tertiary teaching or advising experience that includes students transitioning to study in academic English.
