La Trobe University is on the lookout for a dynamic and experienced Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to champion our cyber security initiatives and protect our institution, partners, and community against evolving cyber threats. 

Position Overview:

As the CISO, you will lead the Office of the CISO and the Digital Records team, spearheading the development and implementation of our Cyber Security Strategy. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations under the Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act and the Privacy Act, among others.

 

The Chief Information Security Officer will be accountable for:

  • Develop and implement the University Cyber Security Strategy and Roadmap, ensuring ongoing monitoring of a comprehensive Information Security, Risk, and Compliance Management Framework.
  • Lead the delivery of cyber security projects and initiatives, including compliance with Defence Industry Security Program and SOCI Act requirements.
  • Manage security operations functions, including coordination of cyber security controls, Security Operations Centre (SOC), and incident response capability.
  • Provide strategic leadership, fostering a culture of continuous learning and empowerment within the Office of the CISO.
  • Offer expert advice and counsel to internal stakeholders, engaging with key business and technical teams to ensure alignment of deliverables with expectations.
  • Represent La Trobe University to external stakeholders on cyber security matters, building confidence and fostering relationships with third parties.

 

To be successful in the role you will need to be and have experience in:

  • Knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, including the Defence Industry Security Program and the Privacy Act.
  • Familiarity with information security management frameworks such as NIST Cyber Security Framework, Essential 8 and ISO27001.
  • Proficiency in current information security technologies and risk management concepts.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with non-technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Leadership experience in strategy and policy development within a large organisation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and negotiation.
  • Subject-matter expertise in cyber security, supporting informed decision-making by key organisational leaders.
