About the position

The La Trobe Rural Health School (LRHS) is the largest rural health school in Australia. The LRHS is based at all four regional campuses of the University: Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga. The School has a wide range of health courses including dentistry, oral health, nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, public health, pharmacy, biomedical sciences (onshore and offshore), physiotherapy, social work, speech pathology, exercise physiology, exercise science and occupational therapy. The LRHS aims to make Rural Health and Wellbeing matter locally, nationally and internationally through graduates and research outcomes that make a difference.

The discipline of dentistry and oral health delivers undergraduate courses in Dental Science and Oral Health Science. The discipline has moved to a purpose-built rural dental and oral health clinical teaching school on the Bendigo Health campus. We are seeking an individual who is committed to providing high-quality teaching and an excellent student experience that prepares students to be the dental practitioners of the future. With an eye to improving the quality of and access to care in regional and rural areas of Australia, you will be familiar with innovative technology and approaches, to promote La Trobe as a leader in dental education in Australia. Our network of specialist leads, and clinical educators support our delivery model to produce outstanding oral health practitioners.

This newly created role is available either for a Teaching Focused or Teaching & Research Level C Academic with a proposed start date of 2/2/26.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Teaching & Research & Teaching Focused:

  • Design innovative and effective curriculum, aligning with the internal and external policies, in collaboration with academic leads and course coordinators which reflects developing best practice nationally and internationally, utilising various methodologies including scaffolded learning.
  • Develop curricula that align with clinical competencies and accreditation standards to ensure students are well-prepared for professional practice.
  • Create and evaluate innovative evidence-based assessment tools to measure student performance and program effectiveness
  • Design, coordinate and teach subjects which provide a high-quality learning experience to students in clinical and theoretical settings.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to others in subject or course level curriculum design, development and delivery of teaching to improve the quality of learning and teaching.

Teaching & Research

  • Conduct and lead innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications resulting from that research.

Teaching Focused

  • Demonstrate a scholarly approach to learning and teaching by contributing to La Trobe’s SOLT including outputs relating to disciplinary teaching pedagogy and sharing of good practice through conference and seminar presentations.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  • Demonstrated leadership in designing dental education curricula by applying innovative instructional design principles and learning theories, with a strong emphasis on clinical education
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in curriculum development and teaching with a commitment to excellence in teaching. 
  • Strong record of teaching/service evaluation, with appropriate evidence of quality and impact. – Teaching Focused
  • Strong record of research publication, with appropriate evidence of quality and impact. – Teaching & Research
  • Proven track record as a leading practitioner in dental education, recognised for expertise, knowledge, and contributions at both state and national levels
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in liaising with external organisations/agencies and/or the public. 
  • Skills in the preparation for Higher Education teaching defined by evidence of a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or evidence of equivalent professional preparation for Higher Education teaching (e.g. SFHEA). 
  • Demonstrated evidence of full registration as a general dentist or a specialist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
