About the position

The Senior Network Engineer leads the design, implementation and maintenance of the University's Network Infrastructure. This pivotal role ensures the university’s Network systems are robust, scalable, and compliant with industry standards and best practices.

Technical skills required for the position

  • Network Architecture: A solid understanding of modern enterprise network architecture principles, including designing, configuring, and optimising network topologies to meet organisational requirements. (VXLAN, and protocols MP-BGP, LISP)
  • Routing and Switching: Proficiency in routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, ISIS, BGP) and switching technologies (Catalyst 9000 series) to ensure efficient data routing and switching within the network.
  • Wireless Networking: Experience in designing, deploying, and managing wireless networks, including access point placement, RF optimisation, and authentication mechanisms (e.g., WPA2, 802.1X).
  • Network Monitoring and Management: Familiarity with network monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, LogicMonitor, DNAC, ISE, Umbrella) to proactively monitor network performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimise network resources.
  • TCP/IP Networking: Understanding of TCP/IP protocols, subnetting, IP addressing, and DNS/DHCP configuration (Infoblox) to ensure proper communication across the network.
  • Accreditations/Licences: Hold a current valid industry recognisable accreditation (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE) and basic knowledge of any programming language (preferable Python) and Rest API’s)
  • Documentation and Compliance: Proficiency in documenting network configurations, policies, and procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., Privacy Act 1988) and industry standards (e.g., ISO 27001).

  • Technical expertise and leadership to design, implement, and optimise Cisco SDN solutions that meet the university's requirements and objectives.
  • Collaboration and teamwork to work effectively with cross-functional teams and contribute to university-wide initiatives in SDN and network infrastructure.
  • Innovation and creativity to explore new SDN technologies and solutions that enhance network performance, scalability, and agility.
  • Communication and knowledge sharing to document SDN designs, troubleshoot issues, and share expertise with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Adaptability and resilience to thrive in a dynamic and evolving SDN environment, with a focus on delivering high-quality results and customer satisfaction.
